Changing support for Android 5, 6, and 7 in February, 2022

Micah Daby Updated by Micah Daby

What's New?

In February of 2022, new versions of the Sphero Edu Android app will no longer support Android 5, 6, or 7. This means Sphero Edu 6.3.3 and above will not be available for installation on Android phones, Android tablets, Chromebooks, and Fire tablets that are running Android 5, 6, and 7.

NOTE:
Amazon's Fire OS is based on a modified version of Android. Fire OS 5 and 6 run Android 5 and 7 respectively. As a result, Fire tablets running these versions of Fire OS will also be impacted by the above change.

If your devices are running Android 8 or newer, then you can install new versions of the Sphero EDU app without concern. When accessing the app on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, the latest versions will be available for you to install.

If your devices are running Android 5, 6, or 7 and you wish to use features and fixes available in newer versions of Sphero Edu, then you must update your devices to Android 8 or newer.

What Happens If I Can't Upgrade to Android 8+ or Get New Devices?

If your device runs Android 5, 6, or 7, you will still have access to the version of Sphero Edu already on your devices and you will continue to be able to access Sphero Edu 6.3.2 on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. However, you will not have access to the newest features in Sphero Edu 6.3.3 or higher.

Starting with the Sphero Edu 6.3.3 release, we will no longer officially support the 6.3.2 Sphero Edu app. If we fix bugs or implement new features, they will only be available on devices running Android 8 or newer. We recommend upgrading when possible.
