Changing Support for iOS 10 and 11 with Sphero Edu 6.3.0

Micah Daby Updated by Micah Daby

What's New?

Starting with the 6.3.0 release on iOS, Sphero Edu will no longer support iOS 10 or 11. This means you will not be able to install Sphero Edu 6.3.0 from the App Store if you have a device running iOS 10 or 11.

Removing iOS 10 and 11 support allows us to ensure Sphero Edu is built using the latest, most secure development features, and ensures we can release improvements at a faster pace.

Certain iPhones and iPads do not support iOS 12 or higher. We realize this may be disruptive to some customers who rely on these devices. Please continue reading to determine how you will be affected by this upcoming change.

What Should I Do?

If your Apple devices are running iOS 12 or higher, then you have nothing to worry about. Sphero Edu 6.3.0 will be supported on your device and will be accessible through the App Store.

If you are running iOS 10 or 11 and wish to use future versions of Sphero Edu, then you must update your devices to a newer version of iOS. If your device does not support iOS 12 or higher, then you will need to acquire newer Apple devices that can run iOS 12 or higher.

When Is This Change Happening?

Sphero Edu 6.3.0 will be released on iOS in May, 2021. If you have an iOS device running iOS 12 or higher, then you will be able to install it from the Apple App Store.

Which Devices Will Be Affected?

Certain iPhones and iPads cannot run versions of iOS higher than iOS 10. These older models, primarily released in or around 2012, are locked to iOS 10 and will never be able to update to a version high enough to support Sphero Edu 6.3.0. Since this is the case, we will no longer officially support the following devices, starting with the Sphero Edu 6.3.0 release:

Device:

Release Year:

iPad (4th gen)

2012

iPhone 5

2012

iPhone 5c

2014

What Happens If I Don't Upgrade to iOS 12+ or Get New Devices?

You will still be able to download the last compatible version (Sphero Edu 6.1.0) from the App Store for your devices running iOS 10 and 11. However, you will not have access to the newest features in Sphero Edu 6.3.0 or higher. Starting with the Sphero Edu 6.3.0 release, we will no longer officially support older versions of the iOS Sphero Edu app, or the incompatible devices listed above. We recommend upgrading when possible.
