What Does each Coding Block Do/Mean?

<h4 id="types-of-qr-codes">Types of QR Codes</h4>The Sphero Edu app can scan and open official Sphero Edu QR codes. Sphero Edu QR codes are QR codes that lead to a URL for a public program or public activity. Any QR code leading to another website, service, etc. will fail when scanned within the Sphero Edu app. User-made QR codes that meet the requirements of the Edu app are also supported. These user-made QR codes must link to a program or activity.<h4 id="supported-platforms">Supported Platforms</h4>The Sphero Edu app has in-app QR code scanning on the following platforms, provided the app version is 5.2.4 or higher:<ul><li>iOS</li><li>Android (including Chromebooks)</li></ul><div class="note-callout">NOTE:&#xA0; QR code scanning is not currently available in the Amazon Fire OS, Windows, or macOS versions of the Edu app.</div><h4 id="products-with-qr-codes">Products with QR Codes</h4>Various Sphero products include QR codes. These codes allow for quick, convenient shortcuts to programs and activities. The current products with Sphero Edu-supported QR codes include:<ul><li>Computer Science Foundations: All 3 Sphero Computer Science Foundation curriculum books include QR codes that can be scanned by teachers and students to open the associated CS Foundations activities.</li><li>Sphero Mini Edu activity cards: Edu activity cards are bundled with the 16 pack release of Sphero Mini. These cards include QR codes that allow the user to quickly open associated programs.</li></ul><h4 id="creating-your-own-codes">Creating Your Own Codes</h4>Each public program or activity can be made into a shareable QR code. Follow these steps to create your own!<ol><li start="1" style="counter-increment:li 0;">Go to edu.sphero.com in your browser and find the program or activity you&apos;d like to create a QR code for.</li><li>Select and copy the URL from the address bar for that activity or program.</li><li>Enter or paste the copied address in a QR code generator. There are generally two types of QR codes: static and dynamic. Dynamic QR codes include a &quot;short URL&quot; and allow you to change the program or activity URL later without needing to change the QR code itself.<ol><li start="1" style="counter-increment:li 0;">Static QR codes work well for all programs and activities. These are easily read by the Sphero Edu app on all supported platforms.</li><li>Dynamic QR codes are supported in the Sphero Edu app. These are useful if you want to use the same QR code over time, but change the associated program or activity at a later date. Dynamic QR codes need to include a short URL that is &quot;HTTPS&quot; as opposed to &quot;HTTP&quot;. This will ensure compatibility with iOS and Android versions of the Sphero Edu app.</li></ol></li></ol>NOTE: Dynamic QR codes may appear as &quot;invalid&quot; on the Chromebook version of Sphero Edu. If this happens, use static QR codes instead.<h4 id="troubleshooting">Troubleshooting</h4><h5 id="invalid-qr-codes">Invalid QR Codes</h5><ul><li>Make sure you are scanning a valid Sphero Edu QR code. A valid QR code always leads to a program or activity in the Edu app.</li><li>Programs and Activities must be made public, otherwise they will display as an &quot;invalid QR code&quot; when scanned by other users. However, you can scan your own private QR codes as long as you are signed in and have access to them.</li><li>If a dynamic QR code is scanned, the short URL must include HTTPS for security purposes. Otherwise it will appear as an &quot;invalid&quot; QR code when scanned on iOS and Android devices.</li><li>Unofficial dynamic QR codes are not supported on Chromebook. If an unofficial QR code is scanned, it will appear as an &quot;invalid&quot; QR code.</li></ul><h5 id="camera-issues">Camera Issues</h5><ul><li>Camera permissions need to be granted on the following platforms before users can access the QR code scanner in the Sphero Edu app:<ul><li>iOS</li><li>Android</li></ul>If these permissions are denied initially, then they will need to be enabled through the device operating system settings before access to the QR code scanner is allowed.</li></ul><h5 id="difficulty-scanning">Difficulty Scanning</h5><ul><li>Ensure there is enough lighting on the QR code for the camera to adequately scan the code.</li><li>Some cameras on devices do not have auto focus. As a result, QR codes may appear blurry when they are too close to the camera. Move the QR code further away from the camera until it is in focus.</li><li>If you are having trouble scanning your own QR codes, try resizing them and making them bigger. Larger QR codes are easier to scan with some cameras.</li></ul> <div class="note-callout">If you have completed all of the above troubleshooting steps, and are still receiving an error code when scanning official Sphero QR codes on an Android mobile device, please use a third party QR scanner app such as Google Lens.</div>

In some situations, you may want to adjust the text-to-speech playback for the &quot;Speak&quot; block in the block canvas. The Sphero Edu app does not directly generate the audio for the &quot;Speak&quot; block. Rather, it sends data to the operating system of your device to process the audio. This means you must change setting in the operating system of your device if you want the &quot;Speak&quot; block to sound or behave differently.Since this is an operating system level change, the steps to adjust the text-to-speech playback will vary per platform. If you want more options, you can go to macOS Settings &gt; Accessibility &gt; Spoken Content, and download additional voice packs. However, do note that the operating system does not always provide all downloaded packs via their API. The feature is being released in beta to gather feedback. If you&apos;ve used block programming in Sphero Edu before, you will notice that the programming screen for has only a few blocks. The goal of the beta is to keep the experience as simple as possible, so Draw and Text programming are not supported.<figure><img data-hd-align="center" data-hd-height="50%" data-hd-width="50%" src="https://hsfiles.gorgias.help/gm/help-centers/19676/attachments/c1ba4f35-05e2-4cd7-8a78-6aedf296f2ed.png" style="max-height: 50%; max-width: 50%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></figure>You create programs just like you would for any Sphero robot. The &quot;roll&quot; block moves the robot, the &quot;main LED&quot; block changes color, etc. The sound block has fewer options than the standard one in Sphero Edu, and the LED block works best if you set the colors to either 255 or 0.<figure><img data-hd-align="center" data-hd-height="20%" data-hd-width="20%" src="https://hsfiles.gorgias.help/gm/help-centers/19676/attachments/89a6c73a-f651-45da-a7ca-bd9180a0dedc.png" style="max-height: 20%; max-width: 20%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></figure>When you&apos;re done with your program, you can tap the &quot;Start&quot; button on the left to run it on your virtual robot. NOTE: You can run the same program on a physical Sphero robot as well. The virtual world is being downloaded during this time to display on your device. Note: You must have an active internet connection to use the virtual robot. Also, not all devices can display the virtual world. You may see a message saying your device does not support it or you may see a &quot;script error&quot; message. If you see this, you&apos;ll have to try testing out the virtual robot on another device.<figure><img data-hd-align="center" data-hd-height="50%" data-hd-width="50%" src="https://hsfiles.gorgias.help/gm/help-centers/19676/attachments/5de75e81-ff84-48fc-bb1d-fc8dc1e2a28d.png" style="max-height: 50%; max-width: 50%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></figure>When the virtual world successfully loads, your screen should look like the image below (these screenshots are from the Android Sphero Edu app - iOS is slightly different). The green button in the middle will start the program. The &quot;reload&quot; symbol will load the world again, so you can run the program again. The &quot;X&quot; will exit the world and get you back to your program.<figure><img data-hd-align="center" data-hd-height="50%" data-hd-width="50%" src="https://hsfiles.gorgias.help/gm/help-centers/19676/attachments/caf48a79-3c46-4961-a8ef-60f55e9dbbb7.png" style="max-height: 50%; max-width: 50%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></figure> You can change the view by pinching to fingers together or spreading them apart on the screen to zoom out or in, and you can rotate the view by moving one finger horizontally. Below is an example of what this might look like.<figure><img data-hd-align="center" data-hd-height="50%" data-hd-width="50%" src="https://hsfiles.gorgias.help/gm/help-centers/19676/attachments/818fd215-213f-43b6-8b59-dea50f1ef8d6.png" style="max-height: 50%; max-width: 50%;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></figure> <h4 id="important-notes">Important Notes</h4><ul><li>Each square on the virtual world grid correlates to roughly 10cm in the real world if the program was run on a Sphero Mini. So, if your roll command caused the virtual robot to move four squares on the grid, a real Mini should move roughly 40cm running the same command. This is designed to be generally accurate, but many things can affect both the virtual robot and a real Mini.</li><li>Within the virtual world, running the same program can produce slightly different results. The virtual robot may move a slightly different distances for the same roll command.</li><li>The virtual robot can knock over the pins and cones with ease. It can also have some varying results going over the ramps. The beta release is not designed to be a high-fidelity physics simulation - but hopefully it&apos;s fun!</li><li>Programs created with the virtual bot type can only be seen on the iOS and Android version 6.3 clients. You can save these programs in your account, but if you login via the web, use a Mac or Windows Sphero Edu app, use the old (non-Android) Sphero Edu app on a Chromebook, or a version before 6.3.0 on iOS and Android, you won&apos;t see the virtual robot programs. This is because we don&apos;t want to show you those programs somewhere that they cannot run.</li><li>You should never be able to use more than the limited set of block programming commands for the virtual robot. If you make a normal block program, you will have all the block choices, but you can&apos;t run it on the virtual robot.</li><li>Sharing of virtual robot programs is not supported in this beta release.</li><li>The virtual robot beta is only in English.</li><li>The restriction on only supporting iOS 14 and later has been removed as of May 24. If you got an error trying to use an older version of iOS in the initial release, you may still experience an error now because your iPhone may have stored copies of the problem files locally.</li><li>If you experience errors, we would prefer to have them reported to our feedback email address <a href="mailto:virtbeta@sphero.com">virtbeta@sphero.com</a> versus reporting them to our customer support team. When you do, it is very helpful if you tell us the type of device (iOS, Android, Chromebook) and the operating system. One of the goals of the beta is to understand how the virtual world runs on different devices.</li></ul>
